Chickens
Oh, how I love thee! Let me count the ways.....
one dozen,
two dozen,
three dozen
Eggs!

Eggs!
Nothing beats fresh eggs in taste and appearance.
Plus it is sooooo awesome to know that the eggs came from happy healthy birds.
And they're just so darn fun to have around. They make the nicest sounds while I'm gardening and they eat all the big scary bugs I may encounter!
We have them trained to come running whenever we make a clucking sound. They come better, when called, then most dogs!
Because of my Ladies, I have the best compost ever and they are easier to care for then our pet cats.
But there is one terrible, horrible hitch in the giddy up. After about 4 years they really don't lay very many eggs. Of the 4 we have left we only get a few eggs a week. We really don't have the space, time, or money to spend on food for
out door pets.
They just aren't earning their keep.
What is an urban chicken keeper to do?
You may be asking yourself, "Why would she buy more chicks when she doesn't know what to do with the ones she has?"
The answer is a harsh one!
We don't have room for more so I must "cull" the flock of those who aren't keeping up.
(culling is a nice word for butcher)

We should have done it last fall but I simply couldn't bring myself to do the deed.
I have grown to love them (sigh)
The farm saying of, "Ya don't name your food" really applies here!
Now, I have no way out of it. I can't hold it off any longer.
By the middle of June the chicks will be ready to go into the coop so I will do it!
At least I will try! Okay, okay, my hubby will probably have to do the actual killing.

I never thought farm life would be so hard! And we don't even live on a farm (bigger sigh)
